Rescue and Success Stories

A Rescue for Rosie

"Just skin and its skeleton" - animal network volunteer had never seen a dog so severely emaciate

Michigan Animal Rescue League staff members Carmel Herpel (left) and Amanda Mabry take care of Rosie, a wheaten terrier mix rescued from a home on the north side of Pontiac.

PONTIAC - Animal rescue workers say it was among the worst cases of neglect they had ever seen. Thin skin clinging to her bones, the skinny wheaten terrier mix was too weak to lift her head or stand. Her gums were white from dehydration.

Volunteers with the Animal Care Network took the dog from a Pontiac home and brought her to the Michigan Animal Rescue League, where hopeful staff members are trying to nurse her back to health.

"I've never seen a dog as severely emaciated as this dog was," said care network volunteer Kathryn Tucker. "There was absolutely no tissue on this animal, just skin and its skeleton."

Success Stories

Ranger's Rescue: A Success Story

Ranger and Ozzie

Ranger was adopted in July 2008. This is a recent update from his new parents:

We are absolutely in love, and talk all the time about how we can't imagine not having him with us. He has been such a blessing, and he's a perfect fit! He loves his daily walks and loves going for rides with Matt on donut runs on Sunday mornings. He gets along great with my parents dog, Ozzie (a white standard poodle) and he loves going to see "Grandma" in Kalamazoo and getting to play with Oz on the weekends.

He has been the best addition to our family that we could ever ask for. I can't thank you enough for connecting him with us, and giving us a lifelong friend!

Thank you for all that you do!
Andrea, Matt, and Ranger

Apple and Pixie were adopted by their new family on April 7, 2008 after being available for adoption for over 1 year. They actually came to VCA Royal Oak Veterinary Hospital as a team and were able to go out as a team. We are so happy that they finally found a wonderful family with which to spend the rest of their lives.

Snoopy's Rescue: A Success Story

Snoopy was adopted by Sue who saw her on www.petfinder.com. Due to unseen circumstances, Snoopy's original mom was unable to keep her and contacted us for help. The owners of Pet Ritz Lakeshore Resort in Roseville, MI were kind enough to let her board there until a new home could be found for her. Four weeks later and Snoopy found her new family: mom, Sue; her new dog sibling, Molly; and her new cat siblings, Ruby and Fiona.

December 2008: Update on Snoopy, now known as Luna

Luna is happy, healthy and having the time of her life. Thank you to Sue for giving Luna a wonderful home!!!!

Max's Rescue: A Success Story

Meet Max. He was in serious distress when the Animal Care Network (ACN), was contacted. An ACN team led by Marie Skladd responded to the report and found Max and two young puppies in a backyard.

Max’s collar was too tight and embedded in his flesh. It was difficult to gain access to the dogs. The next day another ACN team tried again.

Working with the owners, volunteers Kathryn and Dave removed the chain from Max’s neck and treated it for infection. The ACN provided Max with a new nylon collar and a new leash on life. The Animal Care Network Team will continue to monitor the situation.

Matthew's Rescue: A Success Story

Matthew is featured here with his new family, Tiffany and Heather of Ferndale. Thank you to all who contributed to his care and followed his progress.

Ranger's Rescue: A Success Story
“Ranger” was wandering as a stray kitten and found himself in the corner of a Truck Repair Facility in Warren amongst over 100 trucks!  A very dangerous place for a kitten.

The owner of the company noticed him in the corner and was terrified.  Thankfully the owner contacted the Network office and a foster home was found.

After a veterinary check up and veterinary care, “Ranger” was placed in his new home with his new friend Toby.

Ranger and Toby will be leaving for their first vacation to Toronto with their new owner Amanda.

From a Truck Garage to Toronto!

A very happy ending to and no so great beginning!

Bella's Rescue: A Success Story

Bella was in terrible shape when she was rescued on a ACN run. She had a severe skin infection and was extremely malnourished. As you can see, she was rehabilitated and adopted into a loving home with a family that loves her very much!

Bruno

Animal Care Network volunteers discovered Bruno in a backyard on a routine ACN run. He was emaciated, dehydrated and had no shelter. Bruno was nursed back to health and has been adopted.

Gracie

In the middle of winter on a routine Animal Care Network run, volunteers noticed a small grey object in the middle of a main road. They quickly turned around and stopped traffic. What they found was a 6 week old grey kitten that was suffering from hypothermia. Gracie was one lucky kitten, she only avoided being run over because she laid in the middle of a lane. We have no idea how long she was there. Gracie was nursed back to health and has been adopted.

Boo

In November of 2005, Wolverine Harley Davidson hosted a event that honored cats and dogs that were rescued by the Animal Care Network from the Hurricane Katrina disaster areas.

Boo was one of the puppies that was rescued, he was brought back to Michigan, survived parvo and was them adopted by a wonderful family that met him at this event!

Community Grooming

The Animal Care Network prides itself on helping people in the community with their pets. Thanks to PETCO in Bloomfield Hills, we were able to have several matted dogs groomed at no charge.

Abandoned

The Animal Care Network received a call about 15-20 dogs and puppies that were living in an abandoned lumber and boat yard. ACN sent teams down there with equipment, traps, etc to try to rescue some of these animals. The teams was able to rescue 15 dogs and puppies from this situation.

Hootch

Hooch was left in a backyard when his owner died. A neighbor alerted the Animal Care Network about the situation and Hooch was rescued!

Sadie

This was one of our best rescued. Animal Care Network volunteers were able to rescue a lab/shepherd mix that had been running the streets with a cable actually embedded in her neck, back and chest area. The cable was removed and Sadie received medical attention and made a full recovery.

Owl

This baby screech owl ended up on a window sill of an elementary school during a bad storm. Animal Care Network volunteers safely rescued the owl from the second story. The owl was sent to a wildlife rehabilitator and was able to be released.

Nicholas
Nicholas was rescued from the streets.  He had been attacked by three dogs
and suffered some severe injuries.  Animal Care Network volunteers took
him to the vet where he received over 50 stitches and had to have two drains
put in his neck.  Nicholas made a full recovery and has been adopted

Squirrels

The Animal Care Network will also rescue wildlife. These two baby squirrels had fallen out of the nest during a bad storm. The mother never came back for them and they were following the homeowners around. ACN picked up the squirrels and cared for them for several weeks until they were ready to be released. The two squirrels are now living in West Bloomfield and come back to visit every day.

Chi Chi

This female chihuhua was rescued by Animal Care Network volunteers. She was found in a snowbank suffering from hypothermia (freezing). Chi Chi was nursed back to health and was adopted. If the team hadn't have spotted her she would have froze to death.

Tootsie

Tootsie a 12-year old Dachshund was put in a dark garage when her elderly owner died. Animal Care Network team responded to a complaint call and were able to rescue "Tootsie". She had a medical condition which required daily medication which she had not received in weeks. ACN was able to get her back on her medication and found Tootsie a new home where she can live out her life.

Mojo

Mojo was rescued from a local shelter because his time was running out. He had ear mites, fleas, ringworm and an eye infection. Mojo has since been adopted and is doing great in his new home and is a EXTREMELY happy and healthy cat now!

Pitbull with Weight

This pitbull was rescued from a backyard on a Animal Care Network run. The owner had attached a 20 pound weight to his collar obviously to make him a fighting dog.

Puppy on Roadside

Animal Care Network volunteers spotted this skinny puppy eating out of garbage on the side of the road. She was rescued, nursed back to health and then adopted!

Rabbits

These domestic rabbits were living in horrible conditions. Two of them had died and the feces was inches deep. Animal Care Network team was able to rescue them.

Villa and Her Kittens

Animal Care Network volunteers responded to a call about a mom and kittens left abandoned at an apartment complex. We were able to rescue one mom with four 3-week old kittens; and then found two 1-week old kittens that had been abandoned by a different mother cat. Fortunately the mom with the 3-week old kittens also accepted the 1-week old kittens! Villa is being a great mom to both sets of kittens!!!

Rooftop Kittens

Animal Care Network was able to rescue these two kittens that had been on this roof for days without food and water.

Pitbull

Animal Care Network volunteers rescued this emaciated pitbull from a backyard. The owner of the dog was put in prison and the other 10 people that were living in the household couldn't manage to call about the dog, nor feed or water her for weeks. This is one of the reasons the ACN runs are so important. If we had not been making our rounds that weekend we never would have known about this dog.
